Family Centre

cc_uls
2024

A new multifunctional family centre is proposed as an addition to the kindergarten complex.

he proposed building is conceived as a vibrant community centre, centred around a double-height multifunctional hall that offers a wide range of uses—from physical activities for kindergarten children, yoga, table tennis, and dance classes to community events, public talks, and presentations. Supporting facilities adjacent to the hall enhance its flexibility and user comfort, including equipment storage, changing rooms, showers, and sanitary facilities. The entrance lobby with reception naturally organizes visitor circulation and creates a welcoming first impression, while also allowing different functions and operating modes to be separated when needed.

An important component of the programme is a lounge for mothers with young children, located next to a kitchenette and complemented by an outdoor playground. This space provides a comfortable place for parents and younger siblings to spend time while waiting for older children to finish their after-school activities. The building also includes a smaller community room (Senior Point) and workshop spaces with access to a rear courtyard.

The upper floor accommodates flexible rooms for clubs, workshops, and creative activities. The overall concept is based on adaptability, community engagement, and energy efficiency, with a strong emphasis on contemporary standards of sustainability and accessibility.

The building opens towards the street through a welcoming forecourt that is freely accessible from the public realm, while also maintaining a connection to the community centre’s private garden. Traffic in the street is calmed by a raised threshold crossing. A sledding slope—something the Újezd district has long lacked—separates the building from the grounds of the existing school. The building’s massing responds sensitively to the scale and character of both the neighbouring kindergarten and the row houses on the opposite side of the street.
