Střapole

After completing the renovation of an apartment in Prague’s Malá Strana, the client approached us to take a look at their country house in Střapole. The project had already received planning permission, and the original request was simply to consult on the interior design. After reviewing the documentation, however, we agreed to rethink the house as a whole.

In the end, we managed to reduce both its height and footprint in both directions without compromising its spatial quality. One of the main challenges was connecting the house to the existing garage, which sits one metre lower than the main floor. By subtly rotating the building footprint, we eliminated the need for stairs and linked the two structures with a connecting volume incorporating a gentle ramp.

The house occupies the footprint of a former barn that once stood on the site. The living space opens to both sides: towards the public garden on one side and a more intimate Japanese garden on the other. At the heart of the interior is a central service volume containing the bathroom, kitchen, minibar, and access to a lookout platform. The second part of the house is more private, accommodating a study, bedroom, walk-in wardrobe, and master bathroom. The upper floor provides guest accommodation and a library with a reading room overlooking the main living space.

Our sincere thanks to Jan and Alena—we wish for more clients like them. And, of course, to Mr. Mourek.
